Ashes To Go

This is the fifth year I have done ashes to go on campus, and while I can’t say our presence on campus for this can be reflected by our numbers, I did notice something different this year.  Several staff, faculty, and students mentioned that they always look forward to it.  I think this far outweighs any metric that could be tracked.  People know that come Ash Wednesday, they can expect to see at least one clergyperson decked out in purple stoles and likely gloves and heavy coats offering the simple reminder that we are dust and to dust we shall return.

This totally makes up for competing with apartment complexes handing out free pizza (when I am fasting, no less), different clubs playing music nearby, other ministries (who will go unnamed) protesting us with signs that read “Get your ash in Mass” (I guess I just gave it away, sorry/not sorry), among other distractions.  Despite the cold temperatures and wind that brings you perilously close to recreating a famous scene from near the end of The Big Lebowski (language warning for you kids out there), the message is getting out.  And for that, I am thankful.  I am grateful for the students and employees that took several minutes out of their day to pray with us, gratefull for my peers in ministry for sharing the work, and grateful for the opportunity to provide a space in the middle of a busy campus to remember what matters.  I’m already looking forward to next year.
